Volly of the week

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.This week we’d like to thank David Newman. David has taken on the role of our laser regatta representative and has done a stellar job at coordinating logistics and accommodation for the DBSC away team! The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!

Regatta report

On the weekend, DBSC away team travelled to Wangi (Wangi) on Lake Macquarie for the combined Open and Masters State Championships. Racing on Saturday was a fresh north easterly, which kept all racers on their toes with boat handling. Sunday was even windier from the west, with racers held on shore until 1:30pm when a decision was made to abandon racing for the day.The DBSC away team scored well in all divisions, and a big congratulations go to all involved – most seemed very pleased with their ongoing improvements in big fleets and big breeze.Our prize winners and place getters were: 4.7 Charlie Byford – 3rd overall, 1st U16 Sara Bruce – 5th overall, 1st FemaleRadial Sylvie Stannage – 1st overall, 1st Female Martin White – 5th overall, 1st GGMStandard Campbell Patton – 1st overall Daniel Costandi – 5th overall, 1st U21 David Newman – 10th overall, 1st Apprentice Steven

Race report 19 November 2022

From our PRO Daryl Lawrence:A brisk 20kt gusting 27kt breeze saw 11 hardy souls brave the harbour. during the six or so sprints. The attrition rate left 4 boats for the final surf around the top mark, out to the white drum and home. Luke Parker was dominating; Kirk wouldn’t be chased down in a couple of races. Richard George is seriously thinking of buying his own 4.7 rig for this type of breeze as he revelled in a day without a capsize. Others weren’t so fortunate with a lot of swims. Kerryn Smith had the save of the day with a maximum limbo dance to right his boat from horizontal. Tim Heath was looking good off the line. Peter Collie stuck in there with his splinted finger taking a beating.Daryl and Maxim were well supported by Team Gray and Epworth with Milla Gray and Teddy Epworth helping their parents

More volunteers needed for The Women's Regatta

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far. We still need MORE volunteers for The Women’s Regatta!As a club we are committed to increasing female participation in sailing, and events like The Women’s Regatta encourage female sailors from Sydney and beyond to come together and celebrate their ability, resilience, and love of sailing. In order for this to be a standout event, we need all the help we can get from members who aren’t sailing. Please let us know if you are available on Saturday 3rd December for tasks on and off the water. Member survey results – racing

From our Commodore, Steven London…This will be the first of 6 weekly instalments playing back the findings and insights of the Membership survey we ran earlier this year.Unsurprisingly, 96% of members rated ‘racing’ as very or extremely important. We also asked you about more specific elements of racing – including race management, fleet competitiveness, fleet size, twilight sailing, winter racing series, and a potential ‘green fleet’… And this is what you told us:·The introduction of a ‘green fleet’ was generally not supported, with the majority saying they had no strong feeling either way.There was good interest in twilight sailing, and to a lesser extent, the winter racing series… with the majority of respondents saying they were ‘interested’ or ‘very interested’.Race Management, Fleet Competitiveness and Fleet Size – are what really matters to our members – and where our focus should be.
