As many know, Matt Knight and his family have relocated to England. Despite moving countries Matt sailed under the DBSC flag for the UK Masters Nationals last weekend. Matt finished 10th (out of 23). Not a bad result after not sailing for 8 months. But it’s clear that Matt still needs to acquire the knack of sailing in colder waters… or just throw in the towel and return to DBSC in sunny Sydney 😉

60 Seconds With Sylvie Stannage…
In honour of HSC exams staring next week, today we’re featuring another of our youth radial sailors. Year 12 student and Olympic hopeful, Sylvie Stannage. 1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? I think I started Tackers in the summer of 2013, so I was probably 10 years old. I really hated sailing for a couple of years and only really got into it when I was about 13.2. If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? I’m pretty sure they’re not in production anymore, but the Flying Phantom for sure – it’s an insane foiling catamaran that I would love to get my hands on one day.3. What is your sailing goal? My goal is to go to the Olympics one day, or otherwise as long as the fabulous Brett Beyer can put up with coaching me.4. Tell us the back story to your laser’s name? This is
COVID Rules Relaxation
In light of current COVID regulations and after a review of last week’s season opener, we are revising some of our COVIDSafe policies. Based on available space we will now permit 10 members on the front deck, 20 in clubhouse, and no limits in park. But please remember that the 1.5m physical distancing rule still applies. The changerooms and men’s toilet remain closed. You must continue to change outside or come and go in your wetsuit. However, women are now permitted to use the toilets in the women’s changeroom, with the men continuing to use the accessible toilet. Cashless canteen orders will continue to be placed under the marquee in the park. We know that everyone has been craving a world famous toastie so please order one this week and support our canteen!

Season Opener Club Champs
It was great to finally get the season underway last Saturday. A month late in starting due to COVID restrictions, the first heats of the Club Championships were held under beautiful conditions with warm temps, sunny skies and a decent NE breeze. Forty boats competed in the kick-off event. In the Radials, Martin White was victorious both races. In the Standards, Rod Barnes won the first race, and Ian Alexander triumphed in the second race. Congrats to all the competitors. Thanks also to last week’s race management volunteers: PRO Craig Sheers, assisted by Geoff Boscoe, COTD Jason Wilkins, CCO Derek Hand, and Canteen Assistants Rod Barnes and Gerry Donohoe. We look forward to seeing you all back out there this Saturday for the first heats of the Spring Pointscore. If you aren’t launching from the DBSC clubhouse you can always watch our 1pm race briefing on our Instagram HERE.

60 seconds with… Nicholas Pellow
1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?About 7 years old. I was for’ard hand on a Sabot for a season at the local sailing club. I can still clearly remember tipping after a gybe on the bottom mark during a big Nor Easter; somehow getting trapped underneath the sail and nearly drowning because my life jacket was preventing me from diving deep enough to swim free. On my third and final attempt, I just made it out. Hooked for life.2. If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy?Definitely a SailGP F503. What is your sailing goal?Don’t get trapped under my own sail!4. Tell us the back story to your laser’s name?Iolani was the name of the Hawaiian Royal Palace. The name came with the boat!5. If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties – what would

Twilights Start Next Wednesday, October 7
Twilight sailing starts next Wednesday, 7 October at 5pm, and will continue every Wednesday until the end of daylight savings (except for a few weeks over the holidays). Along with Twilights we’re hoping to run another instalment of the fantastic Brett Beyer Twilight Program (BBTP). We’d like to start this program on Wednesday, 14 October. However, to make it financially viable for Brett, he needs an individual to sign up for 1 or 2 hours of private coaching in the hours leading up to 5pm on Wednesday. If you’re interested in the private coaching on Wednesday afternoons, please contact Andrew Cox HERE. We’ll keep you posted on the future of BBTP, but in the meantime we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday evenings for the best sailing sunsets in the world.
