RACE REPORT 18 November 2023

Sprint RacingLTRaR Pia Hattersley’s report:Saturday saw a good turn out for sprint racing despite many club members being away in Canberra for the ACT/NSW State Championships (see next article). A northeasterly breeze of around 19 knots at times gusting up to 27, plus a smoking hot reach to the wing mark, made for 5 rapid sprint races and some pretty ragged looking sailors at the end of it all. Well done to those who stayed until the very end!In the Standards, early on it was very much a tale of Luke vs visiting sailor Canada (197422), with Canada coming out on top with 5 straight golds. Rod and Grant were also in contention for races 4 and 5. In the Radials Ian, Geoff, Mike, Sara and Martin battled it out for first place and after some close duels they decided to split the gold and take one each. Well done

VAUCLUSE OPEN REGATTA

PRO Daryl Lawrence reports:A filling Nor’easter, the first “big day” of the season, greeted 60+ Lasers (not all signed in) including a dozen or so from Vaucluse Yacht Club and a contingent of ten elite women sailors to lead the fleets around the course. The Etchell’s start line featured in the centre of the triangle, and some twelve-foot skiffs joined the fun on one of their legs. It was a day to pay attention to traffic.Race 1 saw David Newman then Otto Henry and Quentin Burns take the Standard Rig honours. In Radials it was Sylvie Stannage, Healy Ryan and Sara Bruce. In

Competency Training Day – 28 October 2023

Our annual competency training day is coming this Saturday 28 October, commencing 0930. Attendance is expected for all members on the volunteer roster, and strongly encouraged for anyone who may be providing ancillary on-water support (e.g., coaches or parents from outside DBSC who are involved in club race days). This is an annual activity which we regard as a core part of safe and efficient club management and culture. All members are expected and, given the significant growth we’ve experienced as a club, as well as the residual rustiness some of us still have from the COVID disruptions, it is important that we refresh and develop our skills and knowledge for the new season. The 3 sessions are:How to run a race. Andrew Cox, our ex-commodore, will share his experience in planning and managing race days, running briefing and managing sign-on, setting a course, running safe and efficient races in a range

Report on NSW/ACT State Open & Masters Championship 2023

DBSC’s Campbell Patterson reports on last weekend’s state championships hosted by Canberra YC.Canberra served up a challenging track for us ILCA 7 sailors at the States over the weekend. Ultra-flat water, massive shifts and huge velocity differences across the course meant that the thinking cap was far more important than the legs. It was an opportunity for the old boys to shine (and shine they often did). In six races in 2-16 knots over 2 days I won every start (in my opinion), often at the pin end. Staying in the lead proved difficult, however, and Zander and Brett frequently found better pressure, passing me on downwinds or second beats. We raced with our top mark behind a mountain and with an island in the middle of the trapezoid, and it’s safe to say that every sailor benefited from favourable shifts and suffered severe frustration watching others sail around them

Detailed report from last month's 4.7 Youth Worlds in Greece

Photo: Nikos Zagas

By Craig RyanOur DBSC sailors were all boys this year and really did us all proud and we hope to see some of our talented DBSC ILCA4 girls heading to the worlds next year. Jack Restuccia, Cormac Johnston and Healy Ryan all performed well in the Hellenic Nationals during the preceding week whilst Charlie Byford attended a European ILCA training camp! These boys kept getting better as they gained experience and knowledge on the race course as well as coming to terms with the extraordinary heat and wildfire emergencies around them. As only teenagers can, they took it all in their stride and just got on with the job of sailing.Conditions were mostly lighter sea
