Waverley College students Jacob Sheehan and Hunter Norburn have helped the school secure one of its strongest surfing results in recent years, finishing runners-up at the 2026 NSW Schools State Surfing Titles in Coffs Harbour.
Competing in the Senior Boys Tag Team division at the VW State Classic, the pair placed second in New South Wales after a composed performance in difficult surf conditions at Macauleys Beach.
The event brought together some of the best school surfing talent from across the state, with Waverley College progressing through to the Senior Boys final alongside St Francis Xavier College, Bulli High and The Scots College.
Jacob Sheehan delivered one of the standout waves for Waverley in the final, posting an impressive 7.57 ride, while Hunter Norburn backed it up with a 4.47 score as the pair battled rain, shifting conditions and a strong rip running through the break.

Waverley College congratulated the students on their “outstanding performance” following the event, recognising the calm and disciplined approach they showed under pressure.

According to Surfing NSW, Macauleys Beach produced challenging but high-quality conditions during the opening day of the competition, with two-to-four foot swell and changing weather testing competitors throughout the event.
While St Francis Xavier College claimed the state title, Waverley College’s second-place finish cemented the school among the top surfing programs in NSW this year.
The VW State Classic forms part of Surfing NSW’s major state competition calendar and attracts schools from across metropolitan and regional New South Wales.
For Waverley College, the result was more than just a podium finish — it was a statement against some of the strongest surfing schools in the state. With Jacob Sheehan and Hunter Norburn leading the way, the school’s surfing program continues to make waves on the NSW stage.
