VAUCLUSE OPEN REGATTA

PRO Daryl Lawrence reports:A filling Nor’easter, the first “big day” of the season, greeted 60+ Lasers (not all signed in) including a dozen or so from Vaucluse Yacht Club and a contingent of ten elite women sailors to lead the fleets around the course. The Etchell’s start line featured in the centre of the triangle, and some twelve-foot skiffs joined the fun on one of their legs. It was a day to pay attention to traffic.Race 1 saw David Newman then Otto Henry and Quentin Burns take the Standard Rig honours. In Radials it was Sylvie Stannage, Healy Ryan and Sara Bruce. In

New Turf to Rigging Area

As part of the Bay St upgrade project, Woollahra Council will lay new turf and turf protection to a portion of our rigging area starting this Monday. The area of coverage will be between the new footpath to the east and in line with our eastern ramp. It will also cover from the club to the footpath next to the children’s playground. To give the new turf time to establish, the area may be barricaded off for a period. Please ensure you obey all signage and keep off the new turf. During this time all rigging will be further to the west, however we will still be able to access the Harbour using the eastern ramp near the club. Once completed this will be a huge benefit to us all.

Learn To Race Report

Under a grey sky and a shifting wind, Martin White and his team notched up another successful morning of Learn To Race (LTR), featuring short course races in Double Bay.  The fleet consisted of six non-members sailing club boats, and four club members sailing their own boats. Racing commenced on time, and the imposing Max Jura used his height to advantage in holding up the start flags and doing his version of a loud, raw, Aussie accent to give competitors the countdown to the start hooter for a 5-race format. The racing at times resembled “dodgem cars” with each boat vying for top position at the turning marks with no holds barred. On water coach, Martin White, gave his words of wisdom, and by the last race, the fleet was starting to look more orderly. LTR is not just for non-club members.  It’s also designed for tentative club members who are wanting to

4.7 Youth Worlds in Volos, Greece

Four DBSC youth members (Healy Ryan, Cormac Johnston, Charles Byford and Jack Restuccia) have just successfully completed the 4.7 Youth Worlds in Greece.  The regatta was held at the Nautical Club of Volos and Argonauts in Volos. There were 290 boys and 159 girls from 49 countries competing in the regatta. The huge competitive fleet, predominantly light winds, HOT weather, a sprinkling of wildfires and delicious Greek food provided lots of fun and challenges for the sailors! The Aussie team are now en route back to Australia and we look forward to delivering a thorough regatta report in the newsletter next week. In the meantime, congratulations, boys.  We know you (and your supportive parents!) enjoyed a fantastic time and learnt lots on the water. – James Tudball

RACE REPORT 30 JULY 2023

Sunday’s Racing:Winds were variable from light to non-existent, generally from the northwest, but the race committee managed to complete two races. The first (R22) set off in a decent 8 kts. The racing was tight and tactical on the upwind (as long as you didn’t head left off the start line), with some stress added to the downwind legs as the breeze lightened and the fleets compressed. Our PRO wisely moved the weather mark closer for the second race (R23). The breeze picked up again for the first weather leg, but then died off completely for a while. Most managed to complete the second race, though some elected to paddle home early.Winter Championships R22/R23ILCA 6: Ian Alexander / James GoslingILCA 7: Zander Bijkerk / Ryan AldrichILCA 4: [no entries] / Olivia Aitken Winter Point Score R22/R23ILCA 6: Daryl Lawrence / James GoslingILCA 7: David DaCosta Enes / Daniel CostandiILCA 4:

WHAT'S GOING ON

Wharf reconstructionWharf reconstruction works are in full swing, with completion set for late December (hopefully before the holidays). The contractor has cordoned off the worksite with buoy strings, and the corners are anchored to concrete blocks. Please be aware that the anchor for the southwest corner is close to where we sail:

Detailed report from last month's 4.7 Youth Worlds in Greece

Photo: Nikos Zagas

By Craig RyanOur DBSC sailors were all boys this year and really did us all proud and we hope to see some of our talented DBSC ILCA4 girls heading to the worlds next year. Jack Restuccia, Cormac Johnston and Healy Ryan all performed well in the Hellenic Nationals during the preceding week whilst Charlie Byford attended a European ILCA training camp! These boys kept getting better as they gained experience and knowledge on the race course as well as coming to terms with the extraordinary heat and wildfire emergencies around them. As only teenagers can, they took it all in their stride and just got on with the job of sailing.Conditions were mostly lighter sea
