Over the weekend Healy Ryan travelled to the Royal Yacht club of Tasmania, (the venue of the 2026 Australian ILCA championships) for the Tasmanian ILCA States. The Derwent River lived up to its reputation with variable wind speeds mixed with variable wind direction and a little current for good measure, to make for a great challenge to the competitors and officials alike. The Committee did an admirable job to get three races away after a 10:30 launch into glassy conditions, with 3 races completed a little before 2pm they hoisted AP over H (indicating a break on shore). Club Sprints (SailGP)by PRO, Healy RyanSaturday’s usual club racing was disrupted from its usual course by SailGP this weekend, so the start time was moved forward to 1pm and racing was turned into Club Sprints. But this was not the most unusual thing happening. This week 6 members of the DBSC youth squad and at least 4 parents helped run the racing and the usual volunteering duties. You would have seen us in the canteen, running races, setting-up and packing-up.We had Liv Aitken and Zoe Allen helping Paul and Shirley on canteen duties (assisted by Charlie Aitken and Van Allen), then Sara Bruce and Miles Greenwood as COTD and co-COTD respectively (assisted on the rib by Rob Bruce), and Healy Ryan

Autumn Point Score Series: Races 5 & 6 Recapby PRO, Kirk Marcolina The Double Bay Sailing Club’s Autumn Point Score series continued with its fifth and sixth races under exceptional conditions, marking another memorable weekend of sailing. The afternoon started promisingly with a gentle 12-knot northeast breeze, ideal for a smooth sail. However, the wind had its own agenda, escalating to over 20 knots by the second race. Pre Laser Master Worlds Training at DBSC
Eight seriously good Laser Master sailors from ITA GBR and USA descended on DBSC for some southern hemisphere training before the LMW in Adelaide which started on Saturday 3 February.Sydney served up a range of weather for them – from 39degC on Australia Day when many arrived, through sparkling north easters to cloudy light/moderate to fresh southerlies.Those who had arrived sailed with the DBSC fleet on Saturday 27 Jan, then training took place on Sun 28 through Wed 31 Jan. A good number of DBSC ILCA6 and ILCA7 sailors joined in so that the squad was 20 boats on some days.Most of the training was sprint racing in the mouth of Double Bay, but on the Monday when

PRO Geoff Boscoe reports:Saturday’s on-water crew arrived at the club looking forward to hosting Australia Day Long weekend sprints in the forecasted moderate north-eastery breeze. However, Ma Nature was slow to get the message and it remained completely calm at the time of the 1pm briefing. That was embarrassing, especially since we were hoping to impress a contingent of Worlds Masters competitors who were joining us from all points of the globe expecting champagne sailing on Sydney harbour. Nevertheless, there was no option but to hoist the AP flag, settle in at the clubhouse with a world famous toasted sandwich and remain optimistic. Fortunately, the patience of around 20 sailors was rewarded just before 2pm when light ENE breeze

RACE REPORT 16 December 2023
PRO Andrew Cox reports:It was a tough day for the last races in our Spring Point Score Series. During the day, the BOM readings hit all but one of the 16 points on the compass, miraculously only missing SE. Fortunately, during the race period, the official recordings only showed a 45-degree shift range from ESE to ENE. However, as those sailors who were backwinded into the water shortly after the first radial start will attest, we felt shifts on the course throughout the afternoon all the way from NE to the “missing” SE. As if that did not make course-setting (and racing) hard enough, we had the Sail Sydney ILCA 6 fleet monopolizing the Dardanelles, leaving us to set an almost due-east “average-wind” course from somewhere north of Clark Island to somewhere north of the Point Piper YA Mark. After a couple of adjustments to the start line, we were off.
