Twilight sailing

Twilight sailing will resume this evening, 20 October – splash at 5pm for “rabbit start” racing 5.30-7.30pm. If the forecast southerly eventuates, meet in the mouth of Double Bay for a racecourse to be set using a moored boat as the top mark.  For other wind directions, the fleet will congregate in the “usual” areas. The course will be one upwind and one downwind, with no defined finish line. Any variations to this will be discussed and communicated on water.Boats will take turns being the “rabbit”.  For those not familiar with the format, the rabbit sails across the fleet on port.  The fleet must duck behind the rabbit on starboard to start the race.  When all of the fleet has ducked the rabbit, the rabbit can tack as it wishes. We hope to see our usual twilight fleet of 15-25 boats turn out for this!Note: The hoist training with Rod Barnes will commence at 7pm for

Upcoming regattas

With the resumption of racing, it’s time to start thinking about regatta planning. The NSW & ACT Laser Association State Championships are scheduled to be held at Georges River Sailing Club on 4-5 December 2021, while the State Masters Championships are scheduled to be held at Bay Sailing Centre, Port Stephens on 5-6 February 2022.Once again, the club is planning to have a good contingent representing the club at both events. The plan is also to have accommodation arranged for the contingent heading to Port Stephens. As those who attended the regatta in Jervis Bay earlier this year can attest, the State Masters is a great club weekend away.If you are planning to attend either of these events, can you please send Rod Barnes an email letting him know which event(s) you intend to attend?

How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? I was about 10 years old when I first started sailing Manly Juniors at Brooklyn as part of the Hornsby Police Boys Club.If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? I’m sure I’d end up buying some yacht to jaunt around the place in, but I’m actually very excited about my newly purchased second hand laser. What is your ultimate sailing goal? I don’t think I have an ‘ultimate’ goal, but I imagine my short term goal will be to avoid being regularly last around the DBSC course once racing gets underway.Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser? ‘Fine Wine’ – You’ll have to ask Mark Bethwaite, but presumably it relates to how sailing and wine are both part of what makes life fun.If you could add any ingredient to DBSC’s world’s

Season opening soiree

The rapidity at which the club has been able to resume activities, combined with the ongoing restrictions on hospitality venues, means that the club has been unable to organise and host the pre-season dinner for a second year in a row. On the other hand, the club is resuming the club championship BBQs on the deck at the club. The first of these will be on Saturday 6 November. This year we are extending the invitation to the club championship BBQ to members and their families after racing. It’s going to be great fun!

What rubbish!

Members are reminded to use the appropriate bins when disposing of rubbish. As a reminder, red lid bins are for landfill waste, while yellow lid bins are for recyclable waste. Please use the container deposit bin for drink containers for which we are able to claim a container deposit.Unfortunately, one of the tasks this weekend is sorting out the rubbish in the yellow and blue lid bins and then washing them, as people have been using them for general waste. YUCK!

How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? Seven (Manly Junior at WSC).If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? Heron, Laser and Hanse 50ftWhat is your ultimate sailing goal? To do well at top level regattas and to enjoy sailing with my family and friends.Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser? I just bought ‘Peb’ from Chrstine – I will think about a name. I also sail a Heron and my wife has crewed with me a few years and she named our Heron ‘She Said Yes’. Maybe that would be a good name for the laser too!If you could add any ingredient to DBSC’s world’s best toasties – what would it be? Haven’t seen the world’s best toasties so wil let you know and looking forward to seeing what they are. Maybe Jalapenos. What are your second/third favourite

Race report Saturday 23 October

On Saturday Alistair Sutherland (PRO) and Murray Stone (LTRAR) conducted five sprint races in what could be described as perfect conditions. Nearly 50 boats turned out for a sunny 26 degree day with moderate north easterly winds. Many thanks to our on water crew assisting – Thomas Beregi (COTD) and Kim Ketelby (CSO). The on water team provided an excellent preparatory session for pointscore racing which resumes this week.
