Regattas are a great way to travel, bond with other club members, and even make new friends. Rod Barnes is coordinating the logistics, and in some cases accommodation, for club members attending the following upcoming events. Can you please confirm with him if you are intending to attend any of the following?(Open) State Championships | 4-5 December 2021 – will be held at Georges River Sailing Club. Please email Rod Barnes this week if you are attending in order to coordinate transport the DBSC contingent. State Masters Championships | 5-6 February 2022 – will be held at Bay Sailing Centre, Port Stephens. Rod Barnes is organising accommodation and coordinating boat transport. New World Masters Ranking from 2023
ALCA is changing the ranking arrangement for ILCA World Masters Championships to apply from World Masters 2023 which will be held in Pattaya, Thailand in February 2023.The new ranking policy is based on results from the previous Australian Laser Masters Championships. For the February 2023 World Masters in Pattaya, Thailand ranking will be based on the results of the Australian Masters February 2022 Westernport YC as per the new policy.

On Saturday, Shirley and Paul were down on the toastie trade, as many members elected to sit the day out.The day turned out to be a little wild on the water for the third and fourth heats of the club pointscore. While the weather forecast did not predict the wind to build after 12pm, it continued to kick in for a bit, and those who braved the west north-westerly wind had their work cut out for them. The wind continued to build until 14:40 topping out at 28 knots with 35 knot gusts before “calming down” to 23 knots with 32 knot gusts by the end of racing for the day.Of the 15-20 boats braving the conditions, our pointscore race winners were Zander Bijkerk and Craig Sheers in the full rig, and in the radial rig, James Tudball won both races. Double Bay Sailing Club was delighted to host our friends from Vaucluse Yacht Club (VYC) on Saturday for the first leg of the annual Vaucluse Challenge, a traditional rivalry between the two clubs since 1959.Two races were held in Rose Bay, with a 14 knot gusty and shifty south, south-easterly breeze that kept racers on their toes amongst the yachts and Etchells, some of which weren’t too happy about sharing the bay. The on water racing was managed by Daryl Lawrence (PRO) and John Verco (LTRAR) with on water assistance from Justin Davey (COTD), Christine Patton (co-COTD) and Derek Hand (CSO).After racing sailors retreated to the Double Bay clubhouse with guests from VYC where they enjoyed tall tales with a sausage sizzle and some drinks. Vee Jay 90th birthday
The Vaucluse Junior, affectionately known as the Vee-Jay (VJ), was a 11ft 6” two-handed skiff conceived by Sylvester (Sil) Rohu and designed by Charles Sparrow in 1931. The design spawned tens of thousands of builds across Australia and overseas with competitive racing until the 1990s. Champions of the class continued on to win Olympic gold, world championships and the 1983 America’s Cup (John Bertand).To celebrate the 90th birthday of the VJ, Vaucluse Yacht Club (founded by Sil Rohu in 1939) will be hosting a special event on the morning of Saturday the 11th of December 2021 featuring a display of classic VJs from across the era, a breakfast Q&A with some of the original champions of the class and a VJ sail past.Some of Double Bay’s members began their sailing careers in the VJ and they are invited to attend this special event.Details:Date: Saturday 11th December 2021Time: 8.30am rigging, 10am breakfast Q&ALocation: Vaucluse
Race Report 27 November 2021
The forecasted 30 knot southerly abated to permit racing in a lively 23 knots gusting to 31. It was a tough day at the office for sailors and the race committee, with the first warning signal delayed by 15 minutes and 2 races abandoned in conditions where nobody seemed to be looking for extra laps.The on water racing was managed by Nick Alexander (PRO) and Diana Chen (LTRAR) with on water assistance from Jim Dounis (COTD), Peter Collie, Julian van Aalst and John Vasey. Off the water volunteers were Steve London (CSO) with Kerryn Smith and Julian assisting Paul and Shirley in the Canteen before racing, while Andrew Cox assisted with the post BBQ clean up.The races were heats 3 and 4 of the Club Championship series. Important safety notice
CranesMembers are advised not to stand (or sit) under the suspended counterweights of the davits for the RIBs when launching and retrieving the RIBs. The cranes are periodically checked for safety and the club is undertaking a review of the existing system.Paul Adam Propellor GuardThe propellor guard has been taken off the engine on the Paul Adam owing to damage. Anyone using the Paul Adam must take extra care when operating near people in the water. In an emergency pull the kill cord or place the boat immediately in neutral to stop the spinning of the propellor.

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.This week we are featuring Pat Levy. Pat spends countless hours at the club maintaining and repairing the RIBs and on water equipment as well as attending to a long list of plumbing (and other trade) needs. As examples he has recently fitted a filtered water station at the front of the club and installed soap and body wash dispenses in the change rooms which are both greatly appreciated.
