Waverley House Buying Market Jumps by 12.3%, Rentals Down

House buying in Waverley has grown by 12.3 percent, outperforming Sydney as an influx of buyers look for leafy, beachside escapes to spend more time at home and maintain social distancing. Twenty other local government areas in the region show similar growth.

In the latest Domain House Price Report for the last quarter of 2020, Waverley’s house market grew by 12.3 percent with an average price of $3.2 million.

Property experts said that remote working has had Sydneysiders relocating to the beachside, drawn by the appeal of “holiday homes.” Whether investors are looking to move temporarily or permanently, the trend in open houses, which normally averages five groups at a time, saw an increase to 20 groups.

The average time for a house to stay in the market has been cut in half as well. The usual three to four months is down to a short stretch of a month or two.

But industry insiders are cautious about the potential risks once Sydney’s international borders open and people resume a normal workplace set-up.

On the flipside, Waverley house rentals, along with Rose Bay and Coogee, have dropped to 12 percent or at a median price of $1,100 a week for the 2020 December quarter.

Domain senior research analyst Nicola Powell said current rental rates are affected by the ongoing border restrictions and an increased supply due to the building boom pre-pandemic. Sites that usually attract new students, new migrants and tourists are hardest hit by the lockdowns.

Waverley Council Installs Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Council-funded electric vehicle charging stations have been installed around Waverley suburbs to support owners of zero-emission vehicles. The move is in conjunction with two other councils in the Eastern Suburbs, Woollahra and Randwick, in a push to encourage Sydneysiders to consider using electric vehicles (EV).

“There’s a transformation in motoring in Australia and around the world and the move to EVs start here in Waverley and surrounds,” Mayor John Wakefield of Waverley said.

The Councils have partnered with Jet Charge for the facility. The initial EV charging stations may be found at the following locations but the Councils are invested in adding more areas as the needs grow:

Waverley Queen Elizabeth Drive
Spring Street outside Mill Hill Community Centre
RandwickCoogee Beach
Randwick Community Centre
Silver Street car park
Des Renford Aquatic Centre
Woollahra Kiaora Place Shopping Centre

EV users may be able to find the specific locations by downloading the Chargefox app, Bookings and payments are also made on this app.

These charging stations support universal charging for all models of electric vehicles. However, EV owners must bring their own Type 2 (Mennekes) cables to use the facility.

Charge times averagely take 15 minutes and cost around 10 to 25 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Bronte Road Bistro in Waverley has got you covered for Mother’s Day! If you’re planning to treat your mum on this special day, the restaurant has prepared a special 3-course lunch spread for Sunday, the 12th of May 2019.

This modern European restaurant’s Mother’s Day lunch menu is good for $80 per person. The selections include entrees like prawn filled zucchini flowers in sauce vierge or kingfish tartare with crisp bread, and main dishes like pan-roasted mulloway, cavatelli pasta, or confit duck leg.

It’s definitely a feast fit for a queen and you can book for a table via their online website.

Bronte Road Bistro has been serving traditional French, Spanish and Mediterranean dishes since 2008. Managed by the husband and wife team of Stewart and Jessica Parsons, this restaurant has been known for its elegant ambience and food selections.

The restaurant’s usual trading hours are from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. daily. However, Bronte Road Bistro may also open for lunch for special functions and private parties.

This restaurant is quite small but its intimate setting makes diners feel easily right at home.

“This was our first dining experience with our newborn daughter and we were very nervous to how things would unfold. However, the service was very understanding and accommodating- setting us up in a comfortable spot inside and being very patient with us. They even offered to time our meals to coordinate with whoever was holding the Bub.

Food wise it was very good. My wife enjoyed the spatchcock and I had the duck. Both meals were just the right amount and the quality definitely matched the price.

Would recommend going her for a nice romantic dinner even with a Bub.”

“This is a place to go when you want to treat yourself and someone to a special meal. Located in the hub of Waverley, the setting of the restaurant effectively secludes itself and you feel like you have escaped for a while. The food is not cheap, however, it is fresh and comes paired with a nice wine and beer of your choosing. We enjoyed a shared meal of prawn filled zucchini flowers and pan fried spatchcock and cauliflower puree with parsley. While expensive it was a nice mid-week escape for us and we enjoyed the experience.”

“Just moved in down the street, and we decided to head here. Quaint setting, friendly service, nice menu and tasty fare. Oysters on the exxy side, pate was delicious, nailed the duck confit and creme caramel. Bit on the pricey side if I’m honest bit of was a nice evening.”

After Unpleasant Incidents, Waverley College Set to Host “After the Bell” Event to Keep Partying Students Safe

Waverley College will be hosting an event called “After the Bell” on 3 April 2019, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Waverley College Gymnasium. This symposium is aimed towards parents of students in Years 8-10 to help them keep their children safe whilst partying

The event is organised through the effort of a combined schools initiative, after two unpleasant incidents happened in February, requiring police assistance at Waverley College.

The event aims to create a sense of awareness about the various social issues that the youth are facing today.

After identifying such issues, parents will be provided with necessary information and strategies to help them manage risky teenage behaviour and overall keep the young ones safe.

Through the event, parents are expected to be equipped with the necessary knowledge to guide their children in making good and rational decisions whenever they are away from home or school.

All 13 schools are also part of a newly created group of educational leaders from schools in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, called the Eastern Suburbs School Leaders for Youth.

The management of all involved schools support and believe that collaborating ideas and resources are beneficial for the overall growth and safety of the community.

Upon the announcement of this After the Bell event, 400 tickets have already been sold. Ticket fee is at $ 10 per person, and all collected proceeds will be given to the Headspace in Bondi Junction.

Plans to Turn Waverley Bowling Club Into a Retirement Village Opposed

A group called Save Waverley Bowlo is campaigning against the demolition of the Waverley Bowling Club on Birrell Street as plans have been lodged to build a 90-unit retirement village and childcare facility in its place.

In December 2018, the Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club or East Leagues, which manages a number of modern sports, leisure and hospitality facilities around Australia, submitted plans to improve the Waverley Bowling Club with new greens and bowling facilities. However, part of its redevelopment would also include senior housing and childcare site, as well as a swimming pool, a gym, basement parking, and landscaping.

The development application is currently under assessment by the Waverley Council. If approved, the cost of the project could come up to $83 million.

Members of Save Waverley Bowlo, however, are convinced that the redevelopment of the bowling club will be excessive. As a result, the group has enjoined residents of Waverley to write letters to the Council to make their objections known.

Save Waverley Bowlo believes that the proposed new club would bring more traffic to the area and lessen the accessible and recreational spaces for locals to use. They also oppose the scale and the height of the buildings compared to the surrounding buildings in the community.

But the Easts Leagues said the redevelopment is necessary to ensure the continued operation of the Waverley Bowling Club. The facility has apparently been trading on deficits with less than 60 active members.

In 2014, East Leagues also submitted plans to redevelop the site into a $100 million sports and residential facility. However, it withdrew its plans after residents petitioned against the proposal, citing that they don’t want Waverley to become a mini-Las Vegas.

The Waverley Bowling Club is one of the oldest bowling facilities in Sydney, having been in operation for over 120 years.
