1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? About 13 for a speed boat, and I think around 19 on a sailboat, which was a crappy 24ft endeavour on the Swan river in Perth. I like the idea of sailing and the freedoms it symbolised, read all the books on the crazies who sailed around the world and across the Atlantic single handed and was impressed beyond belief. It tickled my imagination and was what I wanted. My first sailboat was actually a windsurfer, learned the theory, surfed and boogied (board that is) before that, (not well to either).2. If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? Maltese Falcon by Perini Navi – Great outdoor Cinema screen, why dream small. Check it out [HERE]3. What is your ultimate sailing goal? To finish in top three line honours in Radial class at

Race Report 23 May 2021
Once again we had a chilly night and morning which meant the winter land breeze was at play on the harbour. Unfortunately the Royal Australian Navy had other plans for the harbour and after the first race, we had a delay and a shift of course before the second two races.Race winners in the standard rig championship were Rod Barnes, David Newman and Nick Pellow, while in the pointscore, Ash Deacon, Andrew Foote and Nick Pellow each had a win. In the radial championship, David Huber, Candice Cushway and Andrew Cox each won a race, and in the pointscore Kirk Marcolina, Candice Cushway and Andrew Cox were race winners.Congratulations also go to Candice Cushway, who achieved her goal of winning a race, and Ian Tudball who achieved his goal of beating Commodore Cox. What will they aim for next? Many thanks to PRO Gerry Donohoe assisted by Kate McHugh, David Airey
Thank you!
Thank you to those who stayed back for the “mini bee” after racing on Sunday. The club has been swept out and cleaned out, with lost property taken to Patagonia for recycling and old sails collected to help fisherman in the Pacific Islands. This means the club is nice and tidy for our stage, dance floor and bar! We can’t do these wonderful functions without your help. Thank you.
Is this your next Laser?
This weekend is the ILCA Laser 50th birthday bash and there are prizes to be won! We have a hull upgrade sponsored by PSA sailing and some brand new sails sponsored by NB Sailsports to be won.

Gnarly footage – call for GoPros
The ILCA Laser 50th birthday bash is this Sunday 30th May 2021 and is shaping up to be an event to remember! We have a 20 knot south westerly forecast which will make it an awesome run/reach from Fort Denison to Watsons bay. For those of you with GoPros (or similar) can we ask you to attach these to your boats and film what we are expecting to be gnarly footage? We have a film company that will be able to compile the footage after the event. Please send footage to Diana after the event.
Call your mates, mates!
We still haven’t quite rustled up the final numbers of the ILCA birthday bash and we still have some boats available to loan.In the interests of (the broader sailing) community spirit we’re asking you to call your sailing friends and ask them to come along on Sunday. In order to borrow a boat for the event, these people should register for the event here, entering “0” as the sail number. The club will then allocate a boat.
Oh, what a night!
After a year in hiatus, the DBSC AGP returned on Friday with a bang. If there is a better, more fun, more friendly, or more entertaining sailing club presentation, meeting and party on Sydney harbour, we want to know about it (and receive an invite)! The front end of the night was the more formal end of affairs with our gracious and entertaining Commodore leading us through proceedings, welcoming all members, and acknowledging the fantastic community we have achieved regardless of how long we each have been at the club. Safety and training, member engagement and improvement to facilities have been a focus of the committee this year to create an inclusive and social environment that generates large and competitive racing fleets.Following the prizegiving, the club’s officers were returned without any alternative nominations. After the formal part of the night, members enjoyed our open Laser bar (literally a Laser for those who have
Life Member
This year we added another life membership to the club’s ranks – John Vasey. John has been a member of the club for over 20 years and has been a consistent and significant contributor during this time. Each week he takes care of refueling our on-water support boats and most weeks provides the rescue boat service on Sunday for the 18s. He uses his network of contacts to assist with lighting and staging for our functions, while his paintings decorate our walls. On top of all this he is frequently at the club doing care and maintenance tasks.John is a gracious and generous member of the club and we sincerely appreciate his efforts for all he does.
